American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim classes are offered during BRAINS' Summer Program.
Red Cross Learn-to-Swim features six levels of instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their skills:

  • Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills
  • Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
  • Level 3 - Stroke Development
  • Level 4 - Stroke Improvement
  • Level 5 - Stroke Refinement
  • Level 6 - Swimming and Skill Proficiency

(Participants are grouped by skill level displayed within each 9-day course and may be moved to other groups as new skills are acquired. )

Water Safety Instructor Training - offered during the Spring

Lifeguard Training  - offered during the Spring

LIFEGUARDING - A job so hot it’s cool!
Learn how to save lives by becoming an American Red Cross trained lifeguard.

An American Red Cross combined course in Lifeguard training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, Waterfront and AED will be offered to qualified candidates at Fort Hamilton HS.

Minimum age of 15; Must be able to: swim 550 yards continuously front crawl using rhythmic breathing and breaststroke using pull breathe, kick, glide. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-lb object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds; swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 – 7 feet of water, resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.


Pool Status: OPEN - Closing for Spring Break from March 26th through May 1st.

SUMMER REGISTRATION:  Tuesdays 5:30 - 7:30PM  Thursdays 5:30 - 8PM    Saturdays 3 - 5PM.

Access to the pool is through permit-holding communtiy-based organizations only; patrons should refer to their group's representatives for their particular schedules.

At All Times...

  • Parents must not leave their children without adult supervision within the facility.
  • Do not drop off children without certifying that your instructor or coach is on hand and that your program will be in session.
  • Parents must pick their children up at the end of their class. NYC School Safety policy requires that any child left behind at the end of his/her scheduled class be placed in police custody;  parents will then have to go the 68th Precinct station house to retrieve their child(ren).

Adult Learn To Swim Registration

BRAINS 2016 Adult Learn to Swim course registration: Tues & Thurs 5:30 - 7:30 PM / Sat 4-5:30 PM until the class is full. This class fills up quickly so do not delay!  Spots Available

Adult Swim Training Registration

Please call to check current availability. Once sessions are full, any openings that should occur are first offered to those on our waiting lists.  If you wish to register or to be added to a wait list for either day please call Maria at 347 267-9469.   Applicants must be able to swim two lengths of the pool without stopping.
